Founded in 1682 by William Penn, Philadelphia is the fifth-largest
city in the United States and the second largest on the East Coast.
Recognized as the birthplace of “life, liberty, and the pursuit
of happiness” Philadelphia is home to more than a dozen of
our nation’s most historic sites.
When Philadelphia was the nation's capital, the
U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives met in Congress
Hall from 1790 to 1800. Historic monuments like the Liberty Bell,
Independence Hall and the Pennsylvania State House, where the Declaration
of Independence was signed, can be found here. Philadelphia also
houses one of America's oldest universities, the University of Pennsylvania,
which was founded in 1740 by Benjamin Franklin.
Philadelphia has a brilliant spectrum of cultural
heritage exhibited in the many African-American institutions. It
is a place where African–American historic roots and culture
run deep with pride. Notable native sons and daughters of past,
and present have embraced Philadelphia as home. Philadelphia welcomes
you to the City of “Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection”.
