PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Dear Friends, Colleagues and Supporters,

Philadelphia, often referred to as the “City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection”, is the site of NBCSL’s 28th Annual Legislative Conference. The city is a cultural avenue that is also home to some of the world’s famous symbols of freedom, like the Liberty Bell, Congress Hall, Independence Hall and the Pennsylvania State House, where the Declaration of Independence was signed and the United States Constitution was written.

What better place to have this year’s conference where our theme is “Ensuring Liberty and Justice for All.” In the Declaration of Independence, the authors wrote, “We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with unalienable Rights, that among them are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.”

In the wake of laws like the Patriot’s Act, cuts in funding on the state level affecting education, and an increase in health disparities, it is important that we note that the symbols of freedom in Philadelphia are symbolic of our need to ensure that liberty and justice is achieved for all Americans.

We hope that you will join us in Philadelphia to discuss new policy initiatives, share your ideas, successes, and to celebrate our achievements and work. Join us as we build communities of excellence throughout the United States upholding the virtues of liberty and justice for all!
