NATIONAL BLACK CAUCUS
OF STATE LEGISLATORS PRESIDENT TO GREET
POPE BENEDICT
XVI AT WHITE HOUSE WELCOMING CEREMONY
Washington, DC- Georgia State representative Calvin
Smyre, the President of the National Black Caucus of State Legislators
is set to greet Pope Benedict XVI in his first papal visit to the
United States, this Wednesday April 16, 2008 at the White House.
President Smyre, along with a host of other dignitaries will greet
the Pope on the South Lawn of the White House. Joining President
Smyre is Maryland State Senator and NBCSL member, Bishop C. Anthony
Muse.
“It is an honor to take part in Pope
Benedicts’ first visit to the United States. This event
signifies a rare opportunity in which leaders and people of all
faiths and political ideologies can come together and bridge
our divides in an attempt to focus on the central issues that
affect us all”
President Smyre will also use this event to notify Administration
officials and other elected officials that this greeting ceremony
comes on the dawn of NBCSL's first annual presentation to Congress
of its federal legislative priorities for 2008. The National Black
Caucus of State Legislators will use this presentation opportunity
to promote federal policy priorities, which seek to address juvenile
delinquency; promote sustainable practices and provide relief to
our nations' housing crisis.
The National Black Caucus of State Legislators (NBCSL) is a membership
association representing more than 600 African American state legislators
hailing from 42 states, the District of Columbia and the Virgin
Islands. NBCSL members represent more than 50 million Americans
of various racial backgrounds. NBCSL monitors federal and
state activity and provides this information to its members through
policy symposiums and conferences. Each year, NBCSL members
pass policy resolutions that directly impact federal and state
