REPRESENTATIVE CALVIN SMYRE, CHAIR OF THE COLUMBUS
DELEGATION,
ADDRESSES HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES ON THE TRAGEDY AT
DOCTOR'S HOSPITAL
ATLANA The following remarks were made by Representative Calvin
Smyre, Chair of the Columbus Delegation, to the House of Representatives
on the shooting at Doctor's Hospital in Columbus Georgia.
Mr. Speaker, Ladies and Gentlemen of the House, I come today on
behalf of the Columbus Delegation, who are standing here with me,
and the entire Columbus community to ask that you keep Columbus,
Georgia in your prayers. This also touches close because Rep. Debbie
Buckner, a member of our delegation, works at Doctor's Hospital
and knew the victims.
On yesterday while we were debating the Transportation Bill, a
gunman walked into the Doctor's Hospital and shot and killed three
persons. We offer comfort and condolences to the immediate families
and relatives of those killed during the gunfire. The gunman was
shot, is in surgery and under guard.
We often hear about violence across the country. But this one has
hit home for us, the Columbus Delegation and you as fellow Georgians.
When incidents happen like this we often ask why? Why do these
types of tragedy occur? Why does one human take the lives of other
innocent human beings? Why? Why? The answer: we do not know. One
thing we do know is that there is a higher being and we ask God
to give us comfort. This is the day that the Lord has made; rejoice
and be glad in it. We thank God for life.
Please join me in a moment of silence for our entire community
as we deal with this horrible tragedy. We also ask for your prayers
for former State Representative Tom Buck whose father Thomas Buck,
Jr. was funeralized on yesterday.
(Members stand for a moment of silence)
Amen. Thank you Mr. Speaker and Members of the House.
