PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Dear Friends and Supporters:
Welcome to the National Black Caucus of State Legislators website! I invite you to browse our pages to learn more about our organization. You will find the policies of the organization, our calendar of events, information about our policy committees and organizational news. We have updated our website to make it more efficient and user-friendly for those who would like to find more information about the work NBCSL has done and will do in the near future.
Over the past 30 years, NBCSL has grown from 90 to a body of 624 African American state legislators who are committed to opening doors, providing access, and educating our membership. Annually, we hold symposiums on issues ranging from health disparities to housing, where our members are educated on the various topics.
As a national organization it is our priority to make the best decisions for all Americans. We must continue to fight for equality and uplift our communities by our actions – implementing policies that will protect and benefit all Americans. Therefore, the resolutions that we adopt at our Annual Legislative Conference become the policies of NBCSL.
Through the partnerships we have created with congressional members, labor unions, and corporate companies we provide a clearinghouse of information to keep our members abreast of growing trends that affect the residents in our states. Equal access to public accommodations, equal justice before the law, and equal employment, education, and housing opportunities are issues significant to NBCSL.
With these ideals in mind, let us forge ahead to build stronger relationships, introduce and implement public policy initiatives, and continue to educate each other on the issues that we as Americans still face. By working together toward a common vision, we can improve the livelihood of all Americans.
I want to thank our legislative, corporate and labor members for continuing to work with NBCSL. I look forward to the year ahead.
Sincerely,
Representative Calvin Smyre (GA)
President
The National Black Caucus of State Legislators
