NBCSL Remembers Yolanda Denise King
Daughter of the late greats, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta
Scott King
WASHINGTON, DC - The National Black Caucus of State
Legislators’ President Calvin Smyre (D-GA) issues the following
statement on the death of Ms. Yolanda King:
“On behalf of the National Black Caucus of State Legislators,
I wish to extend my deepest sympathy to the family and friends of
Ms. Yolanda Denise King.
As the eldest child of the late, greats Dr. Martin Luther King
Jr. and Mrs. Coretta Scott King, Yolanda carried on the legacy of
her parents with grace and great resolve. Her life’s mission
of racial harmony was evident through her motivational speeches
and her work as an actress.
As a life-long resident of Georgia, I had the pleasure of witnessing
on many occasions her advocacy work for peace and nonviolence. Her
encouragement of inner peace nurtured the lives of many in our great
state and around our country. Through her spirit and work, she embraced
and sustained the dream and mission of our great civil rights leaders,
both past and present.
As the president of the National Black Caucus of State Legislators,
I profoundly say that we were indeed grateful to have had her as
a daughter of the civil rights era, and a leader in the fight for
human rights and harmony.
To the King family, our hearts are sadden by your loss. May our
prayers bring you comfort during your time of grief.”
